Hi Kingstons:

Mary Weissler will not be allowed to attend the Kingston Reunion until she learns how to spell Miramichi correctly.  Sorry, it's a prerequisite.

Mary Ellen, congrats and Mom has that recipe for Father Ryan's tonic in one of her recipe books.  A lot of stuff on this site so I don't check in too often.  I get very frustrated with sites that have many photos.  It slows things down so terribly and we all don't have all the bells and whistles. Not whining...just a word of caution.

(Thanks for the reminder Brenda - Tom was mentioning that as well...I am can significantly reduce the size of existing photo's in other sections so they'll load much easier and will be working on that very soon.)

Really, John (and Tom) the site is certainly creating a lot of interest and I am certainly hearing about Kingstons that I didn't know existed.

Take care,

Brenda MacKinnon

P.S. Living in the tropics here in Nova Scotia we didn't have any snow either, John.  Almost as good as Victoria.

Message from Tom Kingston at tk@tomkingston.com:

Hello all again!

It is April 2nd today.  I considered trying to be the first  again to post the first message for the month.  Then I
considered that would be April 1, April Fool's day.  There was no way I was claiming to win first prize that day. Hmmm... let's scroll up and see who that might be. Is it John? Brenda? Mary Ellen. No... looks like Mary Weissler... Hmmm... seems appropriate :-)  The posting certainly is too!

John Vickers, as you know I have maintained your position as web page editor since the inception of the Reunion webpage.  As I'm sure you know, senior management teams often review key personnel within their organization.  The position of editor is considered a key position.  Your position is currently under review.  The following changes to your webpage are required to ensure a satisfactory position review.

1) Keep the pictures out of the guestbook.  Hyperlink them to another page.  Bugs Bunny and Tweety are the only exceptions.  They were and are awesomely cool!!

2) Brenda MacKinnon posted a comment late in the month of March.  It was in the guestbook for a whole of four hours before you archived it in March's notes. If you ever cut off a Kingston like that again, I'm walking into your office and firing you on the spot, with no chance to take any stationery supplies home beforehand.  From now on, there is to be not fewer than 14 days of messages at the guestbook.

3) Until these issues are resolved, your pay is being reduced by 10%.

Welcome all the new people.  Yes, it does appear we have shamed some of the lurkers into the open.  I was thinking we should have a "general amnesty day", much like the library does  (Even the Catholic church has caught on with General Absolution).  I figure if it's good enough for the Pope and the public libraries, it should be good enough for the Reunion webpage.  I'm thinking we should designate a day, say April 14, as General Amnesty day.  All lurkers can post on that day without reprisal.  They will be forgiven.  Of course, failing that, we can badmouth them until the end of the month :-)

Now, to that Joe Weissler guy.  It is now time to deal with that issue.  Listen here, you computerless....I can't think of two more words together, guy.  I guess I have a boxing match with Mary and a footrace with David.... well, I think I have to add a competition between you and I.  Let's see, what do we have... How about a chess match, bucko!!. That's it... we'll have a "no contact chess match". I'll even give you any partner of your choosing.

Also, it's time to start profitting from this reunion.  I don't know where Mary Leslie is learning that stuff about not charging for the cottage.  Who is teaching her that stuff?  I'm thinking $100 per night per head, $100 per day per head for the daytime activities, and $1.00 per word written in the guestbook, retroactive to February 1. :-)

I'm really proud to say I am part of the Kingston clan.

Tom

Editor's Note:  Sorry Brenda - now fixed!  Tom, I hope you realize a 10 percent pay cut means I can't purchase a Swanson's Turkey Dinner this weekend.  :-)

I'll second that BIG TIME!!! :-) Tommy, dad will get a big charge out of your note!  I loved your idea about having an Anmesty Day for the lurkers.  Hahahaha!

Brenda and any of you being hassled with all the graphics...you can turn them off.  If you go under access, preferences you can change your settings so that your puter will ignore all sounds and pictures...never even tries to load 'em...just blows right by and loads text only.  I do this all the time when checking out things online...you can certainly whiz around ALOT faster!

John, you certainly have the site nicely decorated for bunny day!  Adorable.  The lurking children will love it! Also, I just read your story about Craig's Camp and maaannn did that bring back memories!  You write extremely well and I TOTALLY enjoyed reading about the black bears in the dump, the atrocious leeches, the much feared EEEEEEELS and all the rest of your memories of the camp.

I'm glad you like the pictures because you are about to get a whole bunch more.  We are leaving for vacation on Monday (Duck, North Carolina) and I want to get these little treasures back to dad.  Later this afternoon you can expect a veritable tidal wave of pictures to arrive. (Hope I don't blow up your new puter!)  Don't feel obligated to post all of them by any means...pick out the ones you feel everyone would most enjoy.  There are some early ones of your family and NO FAIR holding those back!!!

Message from Mary Leslie at mleslie@nbnet.nb.ca:

Hi, everyone!

Just wanted to wish everyone a restful weekend before heading out to the second leg of the Easter weekend church marathon.  It's a beautiful blue-sky day here on the Miramichi.

Tom, I think your April "General Absolution" for lurkers is a great idea.  The more people who come forward, the better for us all.  By the way, General Absolution has been commonly referred to as the "Car Wash" at our house for years - Dad aptly branded it when it first became widely acceptable as a fast-track method to forgiveness.  We'll have to think of a suitable name for the Kingston date of Amnesty for all those aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. who have remained part of the Silent Majority.  So, let everyone know, April is YOUR month to speak!

As to the money issue associated with the reunion, Tom, you'll be happy to know that your Dad (Uncle George) has a to-do list nearly the length of his arm that he is just itching to get settled.  I've talked with him a bit about this and I imagine that the locals will probably have to form a committee of sorts this spring to get all of the arrangin' done.  If anyone is interested, please let George, me or whoever know. Once we get a better handle on the costs, we'll be able to ballpark a fee.

Personally, though, I must say that I favour a system similar to one that was suggested by John a few months back: all real costs of the reunion will be borne by those in the family who are engineers. The profits will be charged directly to the pockets of those with MBAs.  Failure to make payment on either front will result in a solo trip down the Little Southwest in a canoe with no paddles.  We'll pick you up again at Kouchibouguac!

Speaking of canoeing, just a reminder to all those who will be in spitting distance, the Annual Northwest Miramichi Canoe run will be held on the last weekend of May this year.  It's a great run from the Miners' Bridge, past the Tomoganops, around the Elbow, past the old Allison place and Uncle Billy's to the Wayerton Bridge, about 3-4 hours long with no stops.  It's usually a great day with about 300 canoes, and lots of stops for "refreshment" along the way. If anyone would like more information, just let me know.

It's certainly been great seeing all of your names and thoughts - keep them coming!

Take care, everyone.

Mary

Message from Mary Weissler at 110607.3647@compuserve.com:

Three blondes died and are at the pearly gates of Heaven. St. Peter tells them they can enter the gates if they can answer one simple question.  St. Peter asks the first blonde, "What is Easter?"

The blonde replies, "Oh, that's easy! It's the holiday in November when everyone gets together, eats turkey, and are thankful."  "Wrong!," replies St. Peter, and proceeds to ask the second blonde the same question, "What is Easter?"

The second blonde replies, "Easter is the holiday in December when we put up a nice tree, exchange presents, and celebrate the birth of Jesus."

St. Peter looks at the second blonde, shakes his head in disgust, tells her she's wrong, and then peers over his glasses at the third blonde.  He asks, "What is Easter?"  The third blonde smiles confidently and looks St.
Peter in the eyes, "I know what Easter is."  "Oh?" says St. Peter, incredulously.

"Easter is the Christian holiday that coincides with the Jewish celebration of Passover.  Jesus and his disciples were eating at the last supper and Jesus was later deceived and turned over to the Romans by one of his disciples.  The Romans took him to be crucified and he was stabbed in the side, made to wear a crown of thorns, and was hung on a cross with nails through his hands.  He was buried in a nearby cave which was sealed off by a large boulder."

St. Peter smiles broadly with delight.  The third blonde continues, "Every year the boulder is moved aside so that Jesus can come out...and, if he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter."

Watching the world curling is on the agenda as well.

This site is just growing in leaps and bounds!!  Mom and Dad's picture at his grad amazes me as my kids are about the same age now as they were then.  Wow, the others provide memories for my kids.

Hi folks,

I agree with Brenda re: this site being addictive.  I have it bookmarked at home and at work.  Also, because I don't want to be labeled a "lurker" I feel obligated to leave a message now and again.

Today I was reading about the history and see that the first Kingstons settled in Three Islands.  I have no idea
where this is, but would love to know.  As part of the reunion events, maybe we could search out the original
settlement.

John, I like the idea of a flat rate per family -- children of Sam & Lillian.  Each family can then decide who will pay what amount.  I know in our family, Mark is coming from Ear Falls, Ontario and JoAnn is coming from Winnipeg, Manitoba with family in tow - will be enough of an expense for them....ME

Hi Kingstons....I got a call from Tom Kingston the other evening saying that Mary W. (he told me to mention your name!) and some other first cousins were picking on him.  He ask me to write something on his behalf.....Well, after much thought, and trying to think of the postive side of our cousin Tom, I drew a blank....My bar bill will certainly be on his Visa....including my airplane ticket to travel those 4000 miles!

This evening, I planted 20 dalia bulbs (indoors for now) that came from Grandmother's yard.  My mom (Monica) gave them to me 2 years ago.  They certainly love the 22 hrs of sunlight they get uphere in June.  I also planted "Matrimony" last fall.  This plant originated from Three Rivers...above Uncle Billy's from our Great grandfather's Paul Kingston homestead.

Mom says that Grandmother transplanted this plant to her house in town.  It spreads easily and is very hardy.  It's nice to know that I have special plants in my backyard...For all those that have the "green thumb gene" out there, I suggest you to take back some dahlia bulbs & a small matrimony plant.

Both can transport easily!

John,

It is going to be great having you home for a few days!  Burns is getting the water on at the camp, so that you can spend your days fishing black salmon.

Enjoyed your Gill Net all winter.  When I told Will that the matrimony was from Grand mothers I meant my grandmother's mother of your guys great great Grandmother.  Uncle Billy got it from up there and had planted it in his yard (sorry Will).  I remember as a child it growing wild all over the place in the front yard.

Your nanny had beautiful flowers in flower beds as far back as I can remember.  Dahlias and nasturtiums, to mention a few.  She also loved to hear the robins which she instilled in each of her children.  There is something about the robins that stirs memories or touches a place far, far down deep when one of you children tell me you have seen a robin or heard one.

Memories of Chaplain Island Road, the sound of the big brook, that could be heard only in the spring time.  The smell of the earth, going bare feet for the first time on May 29th., the first spring trout, the smell of wild strawberries.  etc. etc.  The sound of a horse drawn carriage wheels in the lane, the turn of the whet stone to sharpen knives.  All of these things are remembered at the sound of a robins call.

God Bless,
Your Mother

Hi folks,

Well I am completely disgusted... Here it is the 13th of April and we are in the middle of a winter storm. UGH!!! I was really getting optomistic when Will wrote about starting bulbs in the Yukon.  Something is definitely wrong with this picture!

Ray, Rebecca and I are avid campers.  Last year we started on May 13th in Mactaquac.  There was no hot water and it was very cold at night, but we had a great time -- we were dirty by the end of the week, but relaxed. We had hoped to beat our record of last year, but today I don't know.

I think another thing that bothers me about this weather is that I am getting anxious about getting a room ready for the baby before I am too awkward to help.  We are finishing one room at a time -- windows, flooring, etc. so we really need good weather to get going at it.  And because of the camping there is a very small window of opportunity with time. Complain, complain, complain.  Whew ! I am glad to get that out of my system! :)

Take Care everyone....

Hi Mary Ellen...Just to let you know that I planted those dahlia bulbs inside my house for now and hopefully if all goes well, I'll be transplanted them..(I'm experimenting)... We got lots of snow today (just short of a blizzard)

Thanks Mom for writing... Just a couple more days of heat for you and Dad.  Did you get any plants from Three Rivers?  I thought you mentioned grandmother did.  Where did Billy get the Matrimony plant from?  Loggieville? I'm going to plant the Blackeye Susans this week-end.  Have a safe trip back to the Mighty River.I would pay money to hear all the birds from the camp's deck and actually see the Miramichi break up.

I saw a bald eagle yesterday while sking.  It's our first bird back....the seagulls come next followed by the Robins.

John....remember to use the Black Ghost Fly.

Hi Monica et al: Your nostalgic reminiscences of spring brought a tear to my eye. I have to copy your message for Dad. It reminds one of all the simple pleasures of life that people just take for granted.

Warning to Will but no doubt he already knows - matrimony once planted is almost impossible to eradicate. That stuff comes from Uncle Paul's place, above ours in Wayerton.  Was no doubt planted by our great grandmother because it certainly wasn't planted by Great Uncle Paul.

And Mary Ellen, you have been to Three Islands, I am sure.  Again above our place and above Great Uncle Paul's.  Ask your dad.  He knows all that stuff.  Dad actually owns that property.  At least a piece of it.   Perhaps others in the family own a chunk as well.

Good luck fly fishing, John.  Are you sure the ice is out of the river?  They had tons of snow on the Miramichi this winter but not any really deep freezes so it is probably gone.   I cross country skiied down through Edwin Brown's field and up the river when I was visiting at home around March 15.

Cheereo everyone,
Brenda

Newsflash (Canadian Press)

A 37 year old Yellowknife man says he is lucky to escape with his life following the invasion of his home of a plant called matrimony.  "After receiving word from a relative that I had big trouble on my hands, I tried digging it out", Will Vickers said despondently from his tent in a neighbor's yard.  It was to late.  All Vickers could do was watch the plant replicate across his yard and into the foundation of his home.  "Within a few days, the furnace failed, my lights would flicker on and off and I knew I was in trouble - matrimony was getting the upper hand", he added.   Fearing the infestation will spread, neighbours meanwhile have set-up 24 hour patrols looking for any signs of the plant.  :)

(Thanks for the fly tip Will - I have a Black Ghost here which I will bring along.) Brenda it appears the river should be okay nearing the end of the month  jv

Monica, your remembrences evoked by a robin's call really touched me.  I remember mom always looking out the window for the first robin in spring.  Now I know why.

Tommy...I'm back!  Have you ever played Wolfenstein?  It's the one and only computer game I have ever played and it's such a trip!  Our chef at work turned me onto it...I can tell you where to go to download the softwear if you aren't familiar.  Just pretend that all the nazis in Hitler's bunker are me. :=) Love you Tommy!

I say he surfs the Gill Net Lodge no later than the end of tomorrow. Mary Weissler went tow weeks or so between comments to the lodge, but I wonder how long she went before she just had to see what she was missing.

I dunno, Tommy. He seems to have somehow managed to go an entire day without establishing some kind of contact with us! How on earth could he endure this? He must be a very miserable. lonesome boy. ;-)
When I was on vacation I didn't have access to a puter so Gill Net fun was a moot point.
I am taking my little doggie out for a nice, long walk now...the sun is shining, it's in the 60's here in Wisconsin, the buds are popping out on the trees and everything is in bloom. It's just beautiful out there!

Hello all,

Mary, your comments are timely. I called home a couple of hours ago and spoke with my father. Mary, over the last two hours I have given a greal deal of consideration over about what I am about to reveal.

My father indicated that John Vickers was over to visit George and Stephanie (my father and mother). George further indicated that John did, in fact, surf the Gill Net Lodge. He left no comment... Do you know what that makes him???!! And combine that with the fact that John is fishing BLACK salmon....It's time the truth came out...

"John Vickers is a no-good, lurking, black salmon fishermen"

John, I am looking forward to your comments :-)

Clarification of a "BLACK" salmon...

A black salmon is a salmon that has been in the river all winter... he left the ocean in the fall and is now returning to the ocean. The best fish are the spring salmon, they leave the ocean in June and are only a few days fresh from the sea.

Hello All,

Yes, I must admit I LURKED! Actually, I dropped by to see how to go about doing some picture scanning while I am here. Tom, your Dad has quite the set-up. More equipment here than you can shake a stick at.

It is now Sunday pm and we are over here at George's for dinner....lots of Kingston's downstairs..Patty, Bill and Loreen, Aloy & Eleanor, Mary Leslie, Mom and Dad, Ed, Mary and family, Irene Loggie and others...food sure smells good to!

I managed to land two salmon at the cottage this morning...weather getting better - driving snow and then driving rain on my first two excursions!

Will try and see if I can get some of the crowd downstairs to leave a message at the Lodge...:)

John

P.S. Tom, I am relieved you made the clarification regarding "black" salmon. I must admit I had considered submitting your address information to www.we-track-down-racists.com.  jv

Hello Mary: Hav'nt seen you since partridge hunting with that guide Tom the Bomb.

The main reason for this is I want you to say Hello to the best Guy in this World - "GOD BLESS YOU JOE"

We are throwing around ideas re:the 2000 Acomodations, games for kids, everyone to stay at Mary's lodge.  I think there is a bed there for GOD BLESS YOU JOE - the rest of his siblings will have to tent, rent trailers or what have you cept that I George say it would be sad if we cannot enjoy the younger generation roasting marshmellows, hot dogs etc.

Love YA
George

Aunt Monica

I was at my parent's house (Bernie & Pat for everyone else) this past weekend.  I went to Mass with them today.
I'm sure you know what todays celebration was ?  Something to do with a Vocation.  I know how much you wanted your son Kingston & I to attend a similar Mass when I had the pleasure of visiting you this winter in Florida.

Just so you know I prayed for your son (Kingston) today to answer his calling!

John V I will be sending you 14 pictures to your home address   They are mom & dads photo's.  Please feel free to scan them in.

Howdy,

I hope everyone is healthy and doing well. I am so glad to see some positive signs of spring. I was out for a walk at lunch time and it was so nice to be able to do so in comfort.

I heard the baby's heartbeat last week.  I always cry when I hear it as it makes the sickness, sleepless nights and dreadful tiredness worth it. This pregancy has been completely different than the one I experienced with Rebecca.  I have only gained 1 pound as compared to the about 50 pounds I had gained by this point with her. I am not as sick, however, I sure am more tired.  Maybe, it is a boy this time. We have a girls' name (Kathleen Eleanor Rose) and would love suggestions for a boy.  Feel free to send them along.

Mary Leslie and Uncle George, I would love to be a part of the organizing committee. I love getting involved in
projects that have a definite time line.  Just give me a call.

Well best get back to the grind. I am representing the college at a symposium on "Faith and the Economy" at the Saint James & John United Church in Red Bank on Wednesday and I am trying to get my presentation ready in between students coming in with their latest crisis.

Take Care...ME

Mary Ellen, believe me - there is no need to request being on the local organizing committee!  One of the conclusions at our little meeting at George and Stephanie's on Sunday was that we'll need all the hands and heads that we can get.  Besides, I believe you were already nominated, in absentia, mind you, to head up a committee!  John has promised to post the minutes once he gets back to his home, so you will be able to take a gander at some of the things we discussed then.  Anyhow, talk to you soon!

Hello again,

Wow! Great trip to the Miramichi.  Talk about eating, sleeping and being merry!  Scored some real treasures for Gill Net Lodge - thanks to Uncle George & Aunt Carmel to name a few!

I have updated link 04 with some new pictures and plan to add lots more stuff very soon.  Having to travel workwise for the next couple of weeks however will get further add-ons done like those minutes Mary L  (Our meeting notes were accidentally left on my sister's computer and she is emailing them out - hope Tom doesn't fire me over this!  :)

John

P.S.  I also updated the Photo Room
