WELCOME TO PUMPKIN ART!
In the early 1990’s,
Canadian artist John Vickers observed some Halloween pumpkins lit
by use of a strand
of Christmas
tree lights on a neighbours lawn. The experience left him fascinated
with how light reflected upon the
shadows of a
pumpkin carving. In following fall seasons, he began experimenting
with various pumpkin carving
techniques including
carving in the dark while having light project out from within a pumpkin
and simply used
photographs as
subject matters.
Vickers pumpkin
creations have subsequently gained notoriety throughout North America and
have even been
displayed at
Canada’s famed Royal Ontario Museum. They have graced the front pages
of major newspapers
in both the U.S.
and Canada and he has appeared with his pumpkins on numerous television
news programs.
Apart from showings
in Canada, in the weeks following the attacks on the World Trade Center
on 9/11, Vickers’s
pumpkins were
displayed in the New York City metro area and presented as a fundraiser
by the fire department
on behalf of
families of firefighter victims.
Most years, Vickers
has presented his pumpkin display as a fundraiser on behalf of the United
Nation’s Children’s
Fund (UNICEF).
With your purchase of this book, a donation is being made to UNICEF.
From humble beginnings in
the 1940’s to
help the children of Europe from the ravages of the Second World War, UNICEF
has grown to
become a truly
global organization helping children everywhere.
We hope you enjoy

Comic Book Characters
"Growing up in the 70's, the magical world
of comic book characters was a wonderful escape to another reality.
Whether you was catching up on the latest at Rivewview High with Archie
and his gang or waiting for the superhero THOR to strike his mallet, it
was always exciting to open the pages of a new comic book. One of
the great things I have enjoyed with presenting the pumpkins is how the
display attracts both young and old alike. For that reason, I try
to present pumpkins that feature subjects from every generation to add
to further universal appeal - in the case of comic book characters, even
for wee fans of one of their hero's of today, the Big Red Dog!"
(Editor: Some other pumpkin carvings below to show other carving examples - some of the angles could have been shot better similiar to photos above and only a 1.5 megapixel camera was used)
