Hell, I want to
be 1st. for NOVEMBER. We are off to Joe's 60th birthday tomorrow
in Port Perry. I believe a good few of us will meet including Bernie
and Pat and Robert and Hazle Copp from down home. Joe has no idea.
Also special guests I hear all the way from N.B. - ALLIE AND ELEANOR K!
Take care all. Mary W. COME IN. LOVE Aunt Patty.
Correction Hell
should read HELLO. Come in Big John V. Love Aunt Patty.
Hi all,
I hope everyone is doing well. It has been raining here for days and I am thinking my seasonal bout with SADD is starting earlier than usual. I am in a real purple funk. Any other sunlight deprived people out there???
Mom, Dad & Sam made the treck out to Uncle Joey's bash. The car wasn't in the driveway this morning when I left for work, so I am assuming that the festivities must have been pretty good to keep my Father there for anything beyond Saturday night. Aunt Patty, can you give us some details of the event?
Well, I best get
back to work. I am just taking a break from getting ready for two
presentations I have to do in the morning. UGH!!! Take Care
everyone....ME
Hi all!
Sorry I've been awol for awhile...alot going on in the world of rescue. I just flew a foster (11 yr. old) to her forever home in PA yesterday. She'd been with us for over a month and I get attatched. Am really missing her today but knowing she has a great home for the rest of her life makes me smile. She was rescued from a puppymill and had lived under horrendous conditions all her life pumping out litter after litter. That's all behind her now. :-)
M.E. cheer up and count your blessings! :-) I do get blue in the winter too. I've heard this is a common phenomenon caused by a lack of vitamin A from sunlight. I do the "electric beach" thing and it truly seems to help...REALLY!
Aunt Patty, we want ALL the gorey details about that bash you attended...sounds like one hell of a party! :-D
John, your pumpkins were AWESOME!!!!!!! Please keep us posted on the job situation.
Mary W.
There were about
125 guests at Joey's party. It was held at the community hall in
Port Perry. When Bernadette's gift was opened it was a lovely picture
of MOM TAKEN IN 1958! The tears started to roll. The special guests
all the way from N.B. were Allie and Eleanor. Joey had a great big
SMILE. LOTS OF MUSIC with a big cake and Happy Birthday was sung
by all. I was very happy to spend time with Rita's GUY and his 7
year old daughter as well as Steven along with John his wife Dee.
I have not seen Guy in 12 years! I am happy we drove the four and
a half hours to be there. I am not a fan of driving over any city
- especially Toronto. Nothing like belonging to a GREAT family.
HELLO everyone. Love Aunt Patty.
Wow! Sounds like a mini-Kingston reunion Aunt Patty - wish I had been there. It sure seems like a long time since I have seen Guy and Steven Byberg as well.
Mary Ellen, I have a friend in Victoria who sells what are known as SADD lights (seasonal affective disorder) which are table lamps which have a high lux - we have lots of rain and dark days here in winter and she says they do wonders for clients.
Welcome back Mary W...you just may be the Mother Theresa for the animal kingdom! :) I'll find out in another week or so where things stand with immigration matters, etc. and I'll know if I am heading out in any particular direction.
Stopped at Gold Stream provincial park and the river there is full of salmon spawning and dying once again...such an amazing site. The scene was much the same as last year and my photographs from my vist then are here.
John V
Hi everyone,
I had to go to
the Remembrance Day ceremony on the Chatham side of the river this morning
as I had to place a wreath on behalf of the College staff and students.
I was running behind a bit and just as I arrived at the park, they were
beginning to read off the names of the Kingston's from the Miramichi who
had been in the 1st or 2nd World War. They said Grandfather's name
and Uncle Billy's. I forgot all about them having been involved.
As the Minister who said the prayer stated, we were all in awe over the
"Survivor" series, but these men -- including Grandfather, Uncle Billy,
and Uncle George (?)-- were the ultimate survivors. Thank you....ME
M.E. I am about to tell you something that will make you REALLY jealous! Guess what I am doing at 3pm this afternoon? Guess! I am getting a MASSAGE! A full one hour MASSAGE! I think you should go sign up for one too! :-)
Mary W.
Mary,
You're right I
am VERY JEALOUS!! My friends have been telling me I just have to
have one, but I have never been able to schedule the time. They describe
the after effects as being WONDERFUL! I hope you feel as great as
I have heard. :)
Hi all,
I forgot to announce
that Katie-Rose has been walking full speed ahead since November 3rd.
She has also decided that she will no longer use a bottle and has been
drinking out of a sipper cup. I was really not ready for that second
step out of babyhood. I feel like she is no longer a baby.
With Rebecca we had so many years to prepare for the leap. She had
her bottles until she was 2.5 years; her soothers until she was 4; and
did not sleep through the night until then either. Two very different
girls. Bye for now....ME
ME, at this rate Katie Rose will be in college at age 5! The massage was WONDERFUL! You have to go get one! I felt like a wad of mush afterward and was so out of it I was kinda afraid to drive! :-)
Mary Weissler
Mary, I am becoming a New Englander. Resigned my position here on Saturday however am going to stick around for about another month to help the company through the transition. Going to enter the U.S. via a ferry drive to Seattle and then drive down the highway to New York. (Ugh!)
John V
John,
Congratulations
on your new job. I suspect with being on the East coast you will
be able to make more trips to the Miramichi. I hope your move goes
well. Keep us posted on the voyage across the country....
John, how long
are you going to leave Good Old Canada for U.S.A.? Are you in the
same line of work? Are taking SAM the Cat? Best of Luck.
Love aunt Patty.
OMG John! I just read your news! CONGRATULATIONS on the new job! Somehow I have trouble imagining you in NYC but what an adventure! Yes, please stop by internet coffee shops on your trip and keep us posted. Give Sam a pat for me...he'll probably be quite confused for awhile. :-(
Mary W.
John...maybe you could stop in Milwaukee for a visit on your trek across the country next month??!! :-D
Mary W.
Quiet month.
Since I started off the month, it's only fitting that I sign off.
December should bring lots of GOOD Christmas greetings! Let's hear from
everyone!
Love Aunt Patty.
Hi Aunt Patty,
Goodbye November and hello December! We put our lights on the front bushes on Sat. and are getting our tree on Tuesday. This Christmas will be so much fun because we will have little JOE! I Haven't spent Christmas with a child since I was one myself. We'll be making up for alot of lost time! :-)
Mary W.
Happy Holidays Everyone,
Ray put up a few outside lights a few weeks ago, however, I haven't done a thing inside yet. Tonight I plan to read a book to the girls about when Santa Claus met the baby Jesus. I have an ornament the same as the cover on the book which we will add to our collection -- I buy one new ornament each year.
Having a school age child is wonderful for building up the Christmas spirit. This past week, I went with Rebecca and her Sparks troop to the food bank to make a delivery of food they had collected over the month of November. It was quite an experience for me. Last night I took both girls to the Knights of Columbus tree lighting ceremony. I thought it would be a quick thing, however, there was a mass before hand. Katie-Rose was running around the back trying to get the old men in the back to play with her. Next Thursday, Rebecca is singing at the Town Square with the Croft School Choir and the list goes on. I just love these sorts of things -- way more than any so called presents.
I am looking forward
to hearing from everyone about what you are doing in preparation for the
season. Take care...ME
Kingstons!
There is something I completely forgot to ask all of yus who where at the reunion! Did Jimmy show up? Did he bring his entire family? What was he like? Did he guzzle scotch until he passed out? Please, everyone...tell me all about Jimmy McClourey!
Mary W.
ROFLMAO!!!
Well, I'm sure he must have had a lovely time in Bombay. :-)
i have just read over the last month of emails. It is amazing what you find out. John I am really interested in the table lamps you describe for an injection of the summer time feeling. Amy and Laura have decided that if you are going to be in New York, they will move down with you to attend NYU. Now that should be fun.
Mary W. good for you with the animal rescue. I detest the idea of puppy mills, wish there was something that could be done to ban them. Patty, I would have liked to have been at Joe's 60th, and the present from Bernadette must have been a wonderful touch.
Mary Ellen, it
was nice to see you last night, we did not stay past 11 p.m.
I was taken with how young the staff is becoming, does that mean I am getting
older? Erin enjoyed her night with Katie Rose and Rebecca.
Signing off for now, need a night of Christmas movies with the girls.
Any word on how
John's trip across the country is progressing?
My father phoned the other night and asked, "Have you ever spent 7 or 8 days sitting in your vehicle?" I had never quite looked at my trip that way. Opted to check out the cost of shipping my truck via flatbed and its cheaper than driving including the plane fare for me. Then a work associate asked "What would you rather do - lay on the beach in Clearwater, Florida for an extra week or drive on a highway?" That did it. Truck's being shipped to NYC and I am flying off to the land of orange trees and pelicans...:)
John V
Hi all,
John, that sounds like a great idea. It is soooo cold here the past few days that I can well appreciate wanting to be on the warm beaches somewhere.
We are having our Fall 2000 Animation & Graphics graduation here tomorrow and I have my fingers crossed that we are not snowed out. This would be the perfect end to a fall of chaos if this is cancelled. The VP of Teletoon Canada is the guest speaker and is suppose to be arriving at 2:00pm this afternoon. I am a little worried that he won't make it because of the weather. If he is unable, we will have a mystery guest as our speaker.
Best be off.
I needed to check in as a diversion. Take Care everyone.
Well, as I am about to deconstruct my computer, I guess this is sign off time. It appears you guys will have xmas lights and black font in here till well into 2001. .:) Hope everyone has a great Christmas! (Traffic stats say there is a whopping 25 of you who manage to cruize through occassionally.)
Steve Kingston thanks for your email - it was a hoot! A special holiday wish for you Mary Ellen, along with Mary W. and Aunt Patty - you guys are responsible for keeping the Gill Net Lodge going. Mary R., I hope you recieve the package I had forwarded - I had great fun making it..:)

Chinooks from Alberta have followed me to the Miramichi. Last night the temperature climbed 20 degrees in a short while, and the winds, well I thought the roof was going to blow off the house. Snow from last week's snow storm has disappeared.
Laura and I were back to the Nowlan on Sunday, back the Wallace Road. I chopped down a 100 foot fir tree to get a beautiful 8 ' tree off the top of it. Laura had never saw someone chopping down a tree. I did it with a few concise chops. She was mad at the waste of the remainder of the tree. I told her is she was so smart she could show us the way out of the woods. Abby our golden lab had obliterated our tracks in the snow and had made many others. A sudden look of panic on her face. I had noted several large pine trees as guides on our way through the woods and easily took us back. Great to get a real tree. Great to be back on the Miramichi.

Marking Up My
Winter Wonderland
Dogs tags ring,
are you listening?
In the lane,
snow is glistening.
It's yellow,
NOT white
I've been there
tonight,
Marking up my
winter wonderland.
Smell that tree?
That's my fragrance.
It's a sign for
wand'ring vagrants;
"Avoid where
I pee, it's MY property!
Marked up as
my winter wonderland."
In the meadow
dad will build a snowman,
following the
classical design.
Then I'll lift
my leg and let it go Man,
So all the world
will know it's mine, mine, mine!
Straight from
me to the fencepost,
flows my naturally
incense boast;
"Stay off of
my TURF, this small piece of earth,
I mark as my
winter wonderland."

well.... hello all.... and a Merry Christmas to all. Like Brenda, I haven't posted to the GillNet Lodge in quite awhile...long before the reunion for sure. There's been a few changes in my life since then.... I finally left northern BC and have taken a job with a dot com company in Vancouver. That's right the 'new economy' beckoned and I answered the call.... good bye old pulp and paper and hello dot com baby. My timing isn't probably the best - about five years ago would have been better. Anyway, I work in downtown Vancouver and I live in downtown Vancouver - about a ten minute walk between the two. Life is good!!! I have been hearing a little about the cold weather in TRONA (the rest of North America); it is some cold here in Vanocuver too!! - Why last week in the morning, I even saw frozen water - of course, this was very early in the morning and it melted when it warmed up to +12C (45F)during the day - very very frigid day fdor Vancouver.... I think my timing was about right for the weather anyway.
I'm in Edmonton for Christmas visiting John, Heather, and my nieces, Stephanie and Leslie. I drove up from Vancouver on Saturday morning and will be driving back on Wednesday. We've been having a great old time. We went to West Edmonton mall where I did my Christmas shopping and John, Heather, Leslie, and Stephanie played in the water park (wave pool, water slides, hot tub). I was able to get my Christmas shopping done quickly so I joined them too! It was a great day. Last night we went to church for the children's service. We sang songs... it was a lot of fun.
This morning we opened our Christmas gifts at around 7:30 AM, with coffee, homemade rolls, and a little Tia Maria. Thank you Mom and Dad for the presents. As I write this Mom and Dad are celebrating Christmas with my sisters Patricia, Martha, and Suzanne, and their families in Saint John, NB - they must bve having a great time too!!
Anyway... time to sign off...

Merry Christmas everyone!
I'm home with the three youngest while Big Dennis is out with Dennis and Seamus at hockey practice. We had a great Christmas. I decided the key for me is to attempt to have as realistic expectations as possilble. Prior to Christmas, my biggest worry was everyone in my lot going to feel as if the loot was equitable. Everyone seemed to be thrilled and we captured it on videotape so it will be fun to watch in years to come. It was great having Mom and Dad here. They spent Christmas Eve night at Martha and Mark's and then around eleven in the morning came over to our madhouse for a short visit. Christmas Eve night Sue and Howard entertained beautifully, as always. The grandchildren picked names, exchanged gifts and were allowed to open that one gift. Our children settled to sleep around 11:30ish. Dennis and I went to bed around 3:30 a.m. The children were up around 6:45. We went to the Boyle's for turkey dinner no.1 around 2p.m. and off to turkey dinner no.2 at Martha's around 5p.m. The turkey dinner at Martha's was superb. The food and the atmosphere were splendid! We really had the best of both worlds..... We had Mom and Dad here and two sisters and their families here. It is great!
I'm being beckoned by my lovely little Brendan so I had better sign off.

It was great seeing so much activity on the GillNet over the past weeks. I have been off of work since the 15th, however, I find my other fulltime job much more demanding than the one I get paid for. I have another week and then I head back to the College.
Mark, I am so glad that you and Jennifer have joined the world of e-mail. We really missed you guys this Christmas. It was just too quiet. I thought you might have tried to fool us again and were going to come through the door at any moment. Oh well, maybe next year.
Rebecca's birthday on the 26th was spent at the new movie theatre. 7 little six year old girls attended. Rebecca lost the second of her front teeth last night. She is quite worried that she will not be able to eat anything but turnips and squash. he-he-he!!!
Mary, the VP of Teletoon did get to the graduation. WHEW!!! He was great. I set up a dinner for him and our instructors of the program the night before the gradduation and he was christened as a Miramichier. He had a great time and I think we will see him back another time. One thing about the Miramichi, people do learn to let their hair down when they come for a visit.
Speaking of letting your hair down. we are hosting a New Year's eve party tonight for a few friends and their children. I am hoping they are able to get here with this huge storm in the works. They are bringing gear to stay the night, so leaving is not a big deal.
Well, I best get back to cleaning things up (AGAIN!!!). Take care everyone and Happy New Year.....ME

Hi Everybody,
My first night at my new home here on Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey....on the map I am about 45 minutes west of New York City. My new job started on Monday and everything seems to be going along just fine. The freeways and traffic take abit of getting use to compared to Vancouver Island however I find it's just a matter of getting use to the pace and it's not that big a deal. Everything is kind of different right down to the way people express themselves...pop is always soda, etc. etc. My pet peeve are exits ramps which don't inform you which exit ramp you are arriving at until you are actually at the exit ramp. I typically get lost twice a day however I think I am getting better...on my first day driving to the office I ended up in Pennsilvania and was about an hour late for work..
Still don't have my computer (my life is somewhere in upstate NY on the back of an Allied Van Lines truck) and with what I have, I don't have the capacity to fix up the Gill Net at the moment. Great to see so many stopping by to say hi over the hoiday..byyyye..

Hi all!
I wanted to say that my stressful drive in to Halifax in the snow this morning was brightened considerably by hearing the voice of my cousin, Kevin Vickers, on the CBC. Does this mean that the rest of us are famous by association? ;-)
Best wishes, JoAnn

Hi all,
ME, I took your test and I must have my priorities screwed up. LOL! All the male names I entered belonged to dogs. Need I go on? :-)
John, glad to
hear you're adjusting well to your new environment. All that traffic would
have me pulling my hair out! Changing jobs and homes are among the biggest
stressers we face in life and you're tackling both at once. Take care of
yourself and keep us posted on all your new adventures.

Hi All,
Awoke this am to find the remnants of a major snow storm..my truck is buried. Snow is quite an adjustment in ones life when you haven't been used to even seeing it for the past six or so years. They say that its been years since we have had so much of it here and point out that the last 8 February's have been green...:) Actually, the world can really seem to stand still and be very beautiful when its soo white.
Well, I have a new shovel, new gloves, new boots, a new scarf, even new wool socks - time to venture out and dig out my truck...:) You can call me WINTERMAN!

Hi everyone,
We are in the final stages of flu recovery here. Rebecca missed almost 1 week of school and Katie-Rose gave us quite a scare with a high fever which would not come down. I slept in a chair in her room for a few nights which did not help me get over my flu very fast. Ah, well, we are on the mend now (Thank God!)
I am suppose to be doing the final stages of an assignment for a management development program I am enrolled in, but I seem to be having some technical difficulties transferring work back and forth from my computer at the college to my computer here -- good excuse anyway.
John(aka winterman), it must be quite the shock to the system to experience real winter again. I think in BC they are probably through winter now and waiting for the tulips to bloom. Any regrets?
Well, I best be off. Take Care, everyone.

Hi Mary Ellen,
I really love
the new job and felt kinda dead in the old job, so on that front the move
is great...on the living your life side, I would trade back for Victoria
in a minute. Got an email from a friend yesterday who noted some flowers
were already up back there. I also miss access to sidewalks, parks, etc.
People in the area I live also don't seem very well educated and seem work
stressed much of the time...seen a few nasty road rages, etc. Give and
take, I guess..:)
